- A General Practice Nurse compliments the role of the GP and builds capacity in the Practice
Nurses working in general practice can enhance the provision of primary care services, and provide valuable support to the general practice team. General practice nurses are able to undertake a wide range of clinical procedures and care coordination activities.
- The Federal Government in its 2001 �2002 Budget provided funding of $104.3 million over four years for incentives to encourage general practices in rural areas and other areas of high workforce needs to employ more nurses.
- practice Incentive payment (PIP) to encourage eligible practices to employ more nurses,
- Funding for the provision of ongoing training and support for all nurses working in general practice and
- A scholarship Scheme to support nurses who wish to re-enter the workforce, and to provide funding for nurses currently employed who wish to refresh their skills.
An objective of this program is to assist with the capacity of Divisions of General Practice to support nurses in general practice with a focus on recruitment, retention and education of practice nurses.
